BIBLE VERSES ABOUT KEEPING OUR BODIES HEALTHY

Introduction

In today’s world, conversations about health often focus on fitness trends, diet plans, and physical appearance. While these can be helpful, the Bible invites us to look deeper. Our bodies are not just shells that house our souls. They are living temples created by God and entrusted to us for His glory. As believers, caring for our bodies is a spiritual act of worship. Understanding what Scripture says about keeping our bodies healthy allows us to live in a way that honors God and strengthens our ability to serve others.

Health in the biblical sense includes physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. A healthy body supports a vibrant faith, and a disciplined lifestyle reflects the self-control taught in Scripture. Let us explore what the Bible teaches about caring for our bodies and how we can apply these truths in daily life.

Our Bodies as Temples of the Holy Spirit

One of the clearest teachings about caring for our bodies is found in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, which says,
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies."

This passage reminds believers that our bodies belong to God. They are sacred vessels where His Spirit dwells. Taking care of our physical health is not vanity; it is stewardship. Just as we would not neglect a church building dedicated to God’s worship, we should not neglect our physical health.

Practical Reflection:

  • Treat your body with respect. Rest when needed, eat nourishing foods, and move regularly to strengthen what God has given you.
  • Avoid habits that harm your body or dull your spiritual sensitivity. Gluttony, laziness, and substance abuse can hinder the Holy Spirit’s work in your life.
  • Recognize that self-care is not selfish when it aligns with God’s purposes. It helps you serve more effectively.

Discipline and Self-Control in Caring for the Body

Healthy living requires discipline, and the Bible emphasizes self-control as a fruit of the Spirit. Galatians 5:22–23 lists self-control among the fruits produced by a life led by the Holy Spirit. Without self-control, even good intentions can fall short.

Paul compares the Christian life to athletic training. In 1 Corinthians 9:25–27, he writes,
*"Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last
