The Great Calling of the Human Heart

When Jesus was asked to name the single most important instruction in all of Scripture, He did not point to an elaborate religious ritual or a complex moral framework. Instead, He pointed directly to the inclination of the human heart.
“Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment.” – Matthew 22:37-38
This command reveals the ultimate purpose for which we were created: to know God and to love Him with every fiber of our being. Yet, because of our fallen nature, loving God supreme above all else does not come naturally to us. It requires a supernatural work of grace. One of the most common mistakes believers make when seeking a stronger love for God is attempting to stir up emotion through sheer effort. We try to force ourselves into feeling passionate, treating holy affection as a duty to be checked off or an emotion to be manufactured. But Scripture teaches that genuine devotion to God is never generated within our own strength; it is always a response to His prior love for us.
“We love because he first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19
If you want your love for God to grow, you must spend time contemplating His love for you. Our affection for Him deepens when we fix our eyes on the cross, considering the vastness of His mercy, the patience He extends toward our shortcomings, and the unmerited grace that drew us into His family. Notice that the psalmist candidly admits, “My flesh and my heart may fail.” Strong love for God is not the absence of weakness; it is the refusal to turn anywhere else for strength. When your heart feels dry, that is not the time to run away from God until you “fix” your mood. It is the exact time to come before Him in prayer, bringing your coldness to the only source of true spiritual warmth.
Where Love and Obedience Meet
