Exodus 20:16 (KJV): “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.”
This verse is the ninth commandment in the Ten Commandments. It establishes an eternal principle of integrity. Speaking truthfully is not just a moral duty but a reflection of God’s own nature. Bearing false witness injures others, destroys reputations, and undermines justice in society.

Proverbs 6:16-19 (KJV): “These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.”
This passage lists seven things that are abominable to God, and among them, “a false witness” is specifically mentioned. That repetition highlights how seriously God views falsehood. It tears apart families and communities and drives a wedge between brethren.
Notice that lying appears twice in this list. It shows that dishonesty in any form is deeply offensive to the Lord. When we bear false witness, we join hands with the devil, who is described in John 8:44 as “the father of lies.” In contrast, those who belong to Christ are called to walk in the light, where truth dwells.
The Consequences of False Witness
God’s Word warns that false witness has severe spiritual and moral consequences. Not only does it harm the innocent, but it also brings judgment upon the one who lies.
Proverbs 19:9 (KJV): “A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish.”
This verse reminds us that while people may deceive others temporarily, the truth will eventually come to light. God sees every word and intention. The punishment here is not only earthly but eternal. False testimony reveals a corrupt heart that has turned away from the truth of God.

Truthfulness strengthens the fellowship of believers. When we speak the truth, we honor the Lord, bless others, and demonstrate the transforming power of the Holy Spirit in our lives.
The Example of Jesus and the Call to Truth
Jesus Himself faced false witnesses during His trial before the crucifixion. Matthew 26:59-60 records that the chief priests and elders sought false testimony against Him, yet their lies did not prevail. This scene illustrates how destructive false witness can be. It led to the condemnation of the sinless Son of God.
Yet, even in the face of slander and lies, Jesus remained silent, entrusting Himself to the Father who judges righteously. His example teaches us how to respond when others bear false witness against us. Instead of retaliating with more words, we can rest in God’s justice and maintain a pure heart.
