For example, in Matthew 5:21–22, He explained that anger in the heart is like committing murder in God’s eyes. In Matthew 5:27–28, He taught that lustful intentions are akin to adultery.
Christ calls His followers to live according to the deeper righteousness that flows from a transformed heart. The inner attitude, not just external action, becomes the true measure of obedience.
The Law of Love in the New Covenant
Under the New Covenant, believers are not justified by following the old ceremonial or civil laws of Israel but by faith in Jesus Christ. Yet the moral and spiritual principles of God’s law remain vital.
Romans 13:8–10 beautifully captures the essence of the New Covenant law: “Let no debt remain outstanding except the continuing debt to love one another. For whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” Paul explains that all commandments are summed up in love. Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore, love is the fulfillment of the law.
The Holy Spirit empowers believers to live out this law of love. As Galatians 5:22–23 teaches, the fruit of the Spirit such as love, joy, peace, and self-control embodies the moral goodness that the law describes. Those who walk by the Spirit naturally live in harmony with God’s law because their hearts are aligned with His will.
Living in Obedience and Grace
Though Christians are saved by grace, obedience to God’s word remains essential. Grace does not cancel responsibility. It empowers believers to obey joyfully.
Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commands.” True love for Christ expresses itself through obedience. The difference is that we no longer obey out of fear of punishment but out of gratitude for salvation.
When a believer understands the heart of God’s law, obedience becomes an act of worship. The Spirit writes God’s law on our hearts as promised in Jeremiah 31:33, making it an internal reality rather than an external obligation.
Through daily choices, prayer, and meditation on Scripture, Christians reflect God’s righteousness to the world. The law of God, illuminated by His grace, brings freedom and peace rather than bondage.
