How to Rely on God’s Strength During Difficult Times

Rely on God

Life is full of challenges, times when it feels as though you’re in the middle of a raging storm. Whether it’s a sudden loss, financial strain, health issues, or personal trials, storms can leave us feeling overwhelmed, anxious, and hopeless. Yet, even in the most difficult times, God offers His strength to carry us through. The Bible teaches us how to trust in God and rely on His strength, not our own, to navigate life’s storms.

The Reality of Life’s Storms

Storms are inevitable in life. Jesus Himself reminded us that “In this world, you will have trouble” (John 16:33). Whether it’s the pressures of daily life or unexpected crises, difficult times come to everyone. But Jesus also offers hope: “But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

These words remind us that while we can’t avoid life’s storms, we are not alone in facing them. God’s strength is available to us at all times. Understanding how to lean on that strength can make all the difference when facing trials.

Relying on God’s Strength

One of the greatest challenges during difficult times is our tendency to rely on our own strength, trying to fix everything ourselves. Yet, the Bible teaches us that God’s power is perfected in our weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we stop striving in our own strength and begin depending on God’s, we experience His supernatural strength to endure and overcome.

Isaiah 40:31 reminds us that “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” When we place our trust in God, He renews our strength, allowing us to rise above our circumstances with peace and resilience.

How to Lean on God During Difficult Times

  1. Trust in His Promises: The Bible is filled with promises of God’s faithfulness, provision, and presence during tough times. One of the most comforting passages is found in Psalm 46:1, which says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Trusting in God’s promises allows us to rest, knowing that He is in control, even when we are not.
  2. Pray for Strength: When we feel weak and discouraged, prayer is our direct line to God. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us to “not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Prayer invites God’s peace into our hearts and helps us refocus on His power, rather than the storm around us.
  3. Stay Rooted in Scripture: God’s Word is a powerful tool for facing life’s storms. Verses like Isaiah 41:10 remind us of God’s presence: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.” Meditating on scripture keeps our minds anchored in truth, even when our emotions try to lead us astray.
  4. Surrender Control to God: One of the hardest aspects of facing life’s storms is the feeling of losing control. However, God calls us to surrender our worries and trust in Him fully. Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Surrendering control allows God to work in ways beyond our understanding.
  5. Draw Strength from Community: God designed us to support and uplift one another during hard times. Leaning on your community—whether through church, friends, or family—can provide comfort, prayer, and practical support. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us, “Two are better than one… if either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” Community can be a vital source of strength and encouragement during life’s storms.

God’s Power Made Perfect in Weakness

When we go through difficult seasons, it’s natural to feel inadequate or powerless. Yet, it’s in these moments of weakness that God’s power is most evident. As 2 Corinthians 12:9 says, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” When we embrace our weakness and turn to God, His grace and strength are poured into our lives.

By relying on God’s strength rather than our own, we discover that His power is more than enough to sustain us through every storm. This doesn’t mean that the difficulties will disappear overnight, but it does mean that we are equipped with the endurance, peace, and hope that only God can provide.

Faith and Endurance in the Storm

Facing life’s storms with faith is not about ignoring the reality of hardship, but about enduring it with confidence in God’s ultimate plan. James 1:2-4 offers a challenging yet encouraging perspective: “Consider it pure joy… whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

When we rely on God’s strength during tough times, our faith is refined, and we grow stronger in character and resilience. Our trials become opportunities for spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God.

Conclusion: Strength in Every Storm

Life’s storms are inevitable, but they don’t have to overwhelm us. By relying on God’s strength, we find peace, hope, and endurance to weather any trial. As we trust in God’s promises, pray for His guidance, meditate on His Word, and surrender control, we tap into a source of strength that far exceeds our own.

In every season of life—whether calm or stormy—God is with us, ready to strengthen, uphold, and carry us through. No matter what you are facing today, remember that God’s strength is made perfect in your weakness, and He will never leave you nor forsake you.
