The prophet Micah summarized the heart of God’s commands by saying, “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Acting justly means refusing to take advantage of others. Old Testament Warnings Against Exploitation
The Old Testament is filled with clear instructions against taking advantage of others, especially the poor and powerless. Leviticus 19:13 says, “Do not defraud or rob your neighbor. Do not hold back the wages of a hired worker overnight.” This command shows God’s concern for fair treatment in daily life. Employers were not to delay payment or cheat laborers of their rightful earnings.
Similarly, Deuteronomy 24:14–15 instructs, “Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner… Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor and are counting on it.” God’s command reveals His compassion and justice. To exploit someone in financial need was not merely wrong, it was a sin against God Himself.
Prophets consistently condemned leaders and merchants who took advantage of others. Amos 8:4–6 warns against those who trample on the needy and cheat in business. It shows that God sees every dishonest gain and will hold oppressors accountable.
Jesus and the Call to Righteous Living
When Jesus walked the earth, He exposed every form of hypocrisy and injustice. He stood against systems that abused the weak and honored those who were humble in spirit.
